First Day of Puppets

The Wednesday girls show off their very first shadow puppets! Tamia's character has super swirling hair, Kamilah's characters have ultra waving arms and super bendy waists, and Tashana's 'Mrs Days' is all decked out with brass connectors.

This blog is part of a "My Message" Illustration and Puppet-Making afterschool program at PS 111 in the Bronx.

Essential Question:
What is the essence of a story?

Foundation Statement:
Storytelling is an art. It is the ability to communicate a narrative that engages, hooks, and connects an audience and provides them with a new perspective on their own life. This class will teach students how to create a story, how to engage an audience, and communicate their ideas and tell their story through different mediums.

The students will begin by reading and watching different stories, ranging from Aesop’s Fables to Dr Seuss to The Muppets, and examining the different ways these stories are told (writing, illustration, and live action). While they learn about different ways to tell stories, they will be creating, writing, and sharing stories of their own. To supplement their stories and add another dimension to their work, the students will draw and paint their characters as well as design how their titles will appear. Finally, they will design and build puppets based on their characters to give an interactive visual component while reading their story. The students will partner up such that, while one of them reads their story, another student will act it out using their puppets.

By working together to write their stories, draw and paint their characters, build their puppets, and by sharing their work with each other, the students will learn valuable team working skills, different methods of communicating their ideas, and the ability to give and receive constructive criticism. At the end of the semester, their stories, drawings, paintings, and puppets will be shared with their peers and the rest of the Working Playground programs through video or live presentations.
